Danny Lavender
December 8th, 1931- December 17th,2011
Danny Lee Lavender, 80, of Portsmouth died Saturday, December 17, 2011, at SOMC Hospice. He was born at home in North Moreland December 8, 1931, to Alfred Lavender and Delia Wade Lavender.
 
Danny was the 5th of 6 children born to Alfred and Delia. Danny was a graduate of Portsmouth East High School class of 1949. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the US Army, Battery A 87th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He was stationed at Camp Roberts, California; Camp Carson, Colorado where he climbed Pike's Peak; Camp Kilmer, New Jersey and Salzburg, Austria. He was a life-long Christian, serving as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Porter Free Will Baptist Church. He recently attended Rubyville Community Church. Danny was a former Truck Driver for the Sohio Oil Company; an Ironworker at Empire Detroit Steel, and Maintenance Worker at the Goodyear Atomic Corporation and the Meade Paper Company from which he retired in 1992.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roberta Holsinger Lavender whom he married November 3, 1951; two brothers, Leonard Lavender and Jimmy Ray Lavender; and a sister, Betty Lou Lavender Shock. Danny is survived by his daughters, Terri (Rick) Gampp; Rama Lavender, Glenda (Craig) Gullion; 5 grandchildren, Kara (Jason) Sneed, Erick Gampp, Caleb Gullion, Morgan Gullion, Kenton Gullion; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Sneed; brother, Jerry (Patricia) Lavender, and sister Geneva (Homer) Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Dr. Cal Ray Evans officiating, with interment following at Memorial Burial Park, where military graveside services will be held by the Minford Post 622 American Legion and the Lucasville Post 363 American Legion. Friends may call at the Funeral Home Tuesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.

Tim Page, age 50, of Franklin Furnace, passed away suddenly Monday, December 5, 2011, at home. 
 
He was the wonderful husband of Cheri; proud father of Jonathon and Kayla; and the greatest "Pap-Pap" of Sydney Marie. 
 
He is also survived by his mother, Margaret Page, brother Ted and his wife Beth, uncle "Big Ed", Aunt Susie and Jack Hayes; Uncle Gary and Donna Hacker, mother and father in law, Barb and Chet Apel; sister-in-law, Rhonda and Mark Comer; brothers-in-law, Dusty and Tammy and Jeff and Angie Apel. 
 
Tim enjoyed people and "farming"  Lived to be out on his tractor any time he could be.  The past 2 years were difficult for him, but he was strong and determined to "see" his way through.  He will be sadly missed by his family and his many, many friends. 
 
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 10, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Tom Spradlin officiating, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Friends may call Friday from 4-9 PM at the Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services.

Howard L. "Popeye" "Bopie" White, 81, of Slocum, died Saturday, November 19, 2011, at SOMC's Emergency Room.
He was born July 19, 1930, in Wheelersburg, a son of the late Tandy White and Ruth Cole White. He was an Army Veteran serving in the Military Police, and was a retired Shift Supervisor for Martin Marietta. He was a member of the Most Holy Trinity Traditional Roman Catholic Church in Wheelersburg, and was the commander of the James Irwin Post 622 American Legion and the Quartermaster for Sciotoville Post 3630 VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Geneve Lantz White, whom he married Sept. 9, 1951, in Wheelersburg; two daughters, Debbie Lindner and husband Carl, of Portsmouth; and Jeanie White of Wheelersburg; one sister, Wilma Riley, of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul White and a sister, Evelyn Chamberlin.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at the Most Holy Trinity Traditional Roman Catholic Church in Wheelersburg, with Rev. John Trough officiating, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with graveside military rites by the Minford and Lucasville Post of the American Legion. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, where a rosary service will be held at 7:45 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sciotoville VFW or the Minford American Legion for their Student Scholarship Fund.
 
 
Linda Risner Holcomb
 
Linda Risner Holcomb, 64, of Germantown, Tennessee, formerly of North Moreland, passed away on November 18, 2011, in Memphis Tennessee.
Linda was employed by Nike for 26 years, enjoyed spending time with her family, and caring for animals. Linda was a member of the Memphis Area Golden Retriever Rescue Group.
Mrs. Holcomb was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters. She was survived by her loving husband Bob Holcomb, two daughters Amy Lear (Don) and Angela Acone (Michael), three grandchildren Amanda Acone, Nathan Lear, and Garrett Lear, and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be sent to Memphis Area Golden Retriever Rescue Group (MAGRR.org), St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Guardian Angel Pet Rescue, Collierville, TN.
Graveside will be held on Wednesday, November 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace, Ohio. Arrangements are being handled by Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home.

Ruby Ellen Woodrum, 80, of Sciotodale, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at home. Ruby was born June 22, 1931, in Louisa, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Marion Roberts and Stella Carter Roberts.
She was a member of Sciotodale Free Will Baptist Church and the Owner of REW Tax Service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Woodrum, February 2, 2008. She is survived by two sons, Jim Woodrum and wife Sherry, of Winchester, Kentucky; Mike Woodrum and wife Natalie, of Desoto, Missouri; one sister, Gypsy Vipperman, of Mansfield, Ohio; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Jake, Clyde, Hube, Ollie, Henry and Ellwood Roberts, and one sister, Anne Howard.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg with Pastor Aaron Reed officiating, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dorothy M. Thomas, 88, of Franklin Furnace, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
She was born September 3, 1923 in Wheelersburg, a daughter of the late George and Anna Rosetta Morrison. Dorothy was a homemaker and had attended a Baptist church.
She is survived by a sister, Ethel Moore of Franklin Furnace and a brother, Willard Morrison of Wheelersburg. Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Willie" Thomas; five brothers, Paul, Oscar, Fred, Jim and Charlie Morrison and a sister, Lucy Caldwell.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg with Rev. Richard Henderson officiating with burial at the Old Wheelersburg Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and 1 hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the funeral home.
 
 
Emily Sue Kidwell Bussa

Emily Sue Kidwell Bussa, 73, of Wheelersburg, died Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Concord Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
Sue was born September 25, 1938, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Walker and Mary Kelly Kidwell.
 
Sue was a member of the Sciotoville Christian Church and was active in the Nursery and Women's Service Christian Group, was a volunteer for RSVP and was previously employed by Marting's and American Greeting Card Company. Her hobbies were her children and grandchildren, Golf, Tennis, Bowling and exercise.
 
She was married April 12, 1956, at Central Church of Christ in Portsmouth, to Richard N. "Dick" Bussa, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dean Bussa and wife Kathy, of Wheelersburg; Michael "Pete" Bussa and wife Teresa, of Columbus; one daughter, Dianne Pfahl and husband Rick, of Dublin, Oh; her grandchildren, Erik Bussa and wife Farryn; Erin Whitley and husband Josh; Jordan Pfahl; Brandon Pfahl, and Travis Carroll; and her great-grandson, Judah Whitely. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Kidwell.
 
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 7, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Brian Enz officiating, with interment at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. Friends may call Sunday from 1-5 PM at the Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service.

Joyce Juanita McBrayer, 80, of Wheelersburg, died Monday, October 31, 2011 at Best Care Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 24, 1931 in Pikeville, KY, a daughter of the late Wayne Sullivan and Victoria Milam Sullivan. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Perry (Tami) McBrayer of Wheelersburg and Terry (Shari) McBrayer of Tampa, Fla., and four grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ralph McBrayer and two sons, Randy and Wendell.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene in Wheelersburg where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home.

Dorothy A. Carter, 78, of Westerville, OH, formerly of Franklin Furnace, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Sunbury, Ohio.
 
Dorothy was born Sept. 25, 1933 in Franklin Furnace, a daughter of the late Frank and Murl Spears Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth L.Carter, sister Geneva Overholtzer and brother Raymond Willis.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Jack) Withers, Grandson Bobby Withers, brothers Edwin Willis, James (Donna) Willis, cousin Ralph (Sally) Spears and nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a member of the North Park Church of Christ.
 
Dorothy's life will be remembered for her devotion to her family and friends. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg with Rev. Ralph Spears officiating, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Richard Galen McAlister, 78, of Sciotoville, formerly of New Boston, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center's Emergency Room.
 
Dick was born February 18, 1933, in New Boston, a son of the late Forrest and Gertrude Day McAlister. He was a graduate of New Boston High School, employed 25 years as an Electrician at the former Empire Detroit Steel Corporation, a Marine Veteran having served 16 months in the Korean War, a Councilman in New Boston for 4 years, and a member of the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion.
 
He is survived by his wife, Esther Armes McAlister, three sons, Richard G. "Mac" McAlister, Jr., of New Boston; John Michael McAlister, of Columbus and Josh Michael McAlister, of Sciotoville; two daughters, Dana Gale McAlister, of Columbus and Kimberly Jane Alda, of Moss Point, Mississippi; 10 grandchildren, Matthew McAlister (Millie), Kristin McAlister, (Jason), Micah McAlister, Madison McAlister, Sterling Demons, Cassidy Demons, Xandra Demons, Travis Demons, Leah Alda and Cameron Alda, and 4 great-grandchildren.
 
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ron McAlister.

Judith Ann Boggs, 72, of Sciotoville, died Saturday, September 10, 2011, at SOMC Hospice. Judy was born November 24, 1938, in Sciotoville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Luther and Gladys Potts Boggs.
 
She is survived by her sister, Regina Belveal, of Sciotoville, one nephew, Michael Belveal, of Sciotoville; two nieces, Sandy Sirois, of Houston, Texas and Debra Munion, of Sciotoville. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Libby Crawford.
 
The family would like to give special thanks to SOMC Hospice and Crystal Care Nursing Home.

Judy Ann Hughes,73, of Portsmouth, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. Judy was born July 2, 1938, in New Boston, a daughter of the late Sherman Bickett and Doris Oneal Bickett.
She was a homemaker and attended New Boston Christian Church and Manley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Cathrine Lisa Oliphant and her husband, Dr. John Oliphant, of Louisville; Michelle McCall and husband, Pastor Don McCall, of Franklin Furnace; one brother, Gary Bickett, of Wheelersburg; her grandchildren, Charity Smith and husband Josh, of Minford; Leah and Jonathan McCall and Lance and Brooke Oliphant; and her devoted ex-husband, Virgil Eugene Hughes, of Portsmouth.

Eileen Wilson Clifton, 87, of Wheelersburg, died Sunday, August 21, 2011, at SOMC Hospice. She was born September 23, 1923, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Joe M. and Katherine E. Sutterfield Hale.
She attended Central Church of Christ and was employed 44 years at the former Williams Shoe Mfg.
She is survived by her son, Charlie Wilson, of Wheelersburg; three grandsons, William J. Wilson, Mark Bryan Wilson, Jr and Charles Joseph Wilson and 4 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Robert J. Wilson and Joe Clifton and one brother, Robert Hale.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011, from 6-8 PM at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with private burial at Friendship Cemetery.

Betty Jane Cook, 83, of Sciotoville, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011, at Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
Betty was born February 5, 1928, in Wheelersburg, the daughter of the late Ernest and Clara M Ockerman Cook. She was a homemaker and a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
 
She was married March 31, 1951, in Sciotovlle, to Willard Cook, who preceded her in death November 1, 1981.
 
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Rice and husband James, of Worthington, Ky; Rita Atkinson and husband Rusty, of Richmond, Va; two brothers, Ernest Cook, Jr., of Wheelersburg and Paul Cook of Columbus; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Willard Harold Cook, Jr, and a sister, Ida Mae Cook.

Mary Louise Wessel, 90, of Wheelersburg, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
 
Mary was born November 6, 1920, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Harry Schwamberger and Isabell Jenkins Schwamberger.
 
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville, retired from the former Mitchellace Shoe Company and was a member of the Porter Township Fire Department Ladie's Auxiliary.
 
She was married September 21, 1940, to Chester Wessel, who preceded her in death September 14, 1976.
 
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Frances Gee (Carl), of Wheelersburg; Phyllis Ann Shanks and husband Russ, Jr., of Baltimore, Ohio; Bernita Wessel, of Nelsonville, Ohio; one sister, Helen Bolton, of Pataskala, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Betty Bihl of Wheelersburg and Juanita Schwamberger, of Wheelersburg; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Clara Elliott, of Nelsonville, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Joseph Schwamberger, a brother-in-law, Gib Bolton, and a granddaughter, Amy Shanks.

Jeffrey L. Morris

Jeffrey Lynn Morris, 58, of Franklin Furnace, died suddenly Monday, August 8, 2011, at UK Medical Center in Lexington. He was born March 12, 1953, in Portsmouth, the only son of Clyde L. and Nina Mae Meenach Morris, of Wheelersburg.
 
He was a 1971 graduate of South Webster High School, attended Christ United Methodist Church, was a carpenter at the Local 200, Columbus, and had an Associates Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering. He was a devoted Christian and family man and enjoyed outdoor photography and flying.
 
Also surviving are his wife, Barbara Sutton Morris, whom he married July 16, 1977, at New Boston United Methodist Church; one son, Jeffrey Lynn Morris II and wife Amy, of New Haven, Connecticut; one daughter, Jennifer Ann Morris, of Princeton, New Jersey; one sister, Linda Bauer and husband Paul, of Wheelersburg; his mother in law, Lorraine Sutton, of Franklin Furnace; his brother in law, Richard Sutton and wife Sue, of N. Royalton, Ohio; and his sister in law, Marilyn Burke and husband JD, of Del Rio, Texas.
 
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville, with the Rev.Frank James and the Rev. Richard North officiating, with interment at Haverhill Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Rosemarie Moore, 53, of Toledo, a former Portsmouth resident, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011, at home. She was born April 10, 1958, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late William Gibson and Ivy Lambert Gibson.
 
Surviving are her fiance, Stewart Lewis, of Toledo; two daughters, Carol Ann Moore, of Portsmouth; Melissa Sue Smith, of Columbus; one brother, James Gibson, of Jesup, GA; five sisters, Penny Sue Secrist, of Sciotoville; Tennie Underwood, of Toledo; Tressie Taylor, of New Boston; Judy Silvey, of Portsmouth; Angel Gibson, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Omarion Martin of Columbus and KeLaquisha Moore, of Portsmouth; a special niece, Jessica Suttles and several nieces and nephews.

Stella Mae Craig, 75, of Wheelersburg, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011, at SOMC Hospice. She was born November 13, 1935, in Kirksville, Missouri, a daughter of the late Avery Abbott and Minnie Vanhoose Abbott.
 
She is survived by her husband, Melvin C. Craig; two daughters, Victoria Provaznik and husband David, of Wheelersburg; Carolyn Hanser and husband Andrew, of Seattle, Washington; one brother, Richard Abbott, of Columbia, Missouri; one sister, Maggie Hardsock, of Kirksville, Missouri; five grandchildren, David, Alex and Katie Provaznik, Parth Patel and Tracie Choate; and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Logan Choate.

Gerald E. "Jack" Stanley, 79, of Wheelersburg, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at home. He was born February 11, 1932, in Wheelersburg, a son of the late Homer Stanley and Martha Wright Stanley.
 
He was an Elecrician with the former Empire Detroit Steel Mill, a 1950 graduate of Wheelersburg High School, an Army Veteran, a 32nd degree Mason, member of El Hasa Shrine, the American Legion and the Wheelersburg Western-Sun Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Brisker and husband Alan, of Minford; Patricia Pettigrew, of Wheelersburg; three grandchildren, Melissa Brisker Cron, Jacqlyn Brisker and Amanda Pettigrew; two great-grandchildren, Mychal and Taylor Cron, and a special friend, Norma Joseph. He was preceded in death by one brother, Steve Stanley, and one sister, Helen Stanley.

Baxter (Bill) Kirkpatrick, 85, of Wheelersburg, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011, at Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from complications of Alzheimer's.
He was born July 18, 1926, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. He was a son of the late Birtwell and Susie Kirkpatrick.
 
Bill retired from the NS Railway as a Police Sgt. after 33 years. He was also a Police Officer in Buena Vista, Va. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy Squadron ZP12 UBoat Hunters. Bill enjoyed hunting, working outside and restoring old vehicles.
 
Preceding him in death, other than his parents, were three sisters, Birtie Holley, Edna Holyman and Hazel Kirkpatrick; four brothers, Dickie, Roy, Ray and Jake and also an infant grandson.
 
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marjorie; a daughter, Joyce (Dan) Piatt, of Wheelersburg; one son, Jim (Jeannie), of Wheelersburg; one sister, Irene Thomas, of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia; two granddaughters, Dana (Roger) Smith, of Indianapolis, Indiana and Kimberly (Chad) Egelhoff, of Columbus, Ohio; three grandsons, John (Casey) Kirkpatrick, of Franklin Furnace; and Josh and Ryan Kirkpatrick, of West Portsmouth; four great-grandchildren, Shelbie, Cole, and Baylee Smith, and Olivia Kirkpatrick.

Thursday, July 28, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Pastor Jeff Dunn officiating, with interment at Memorial Burial Park, with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Vivian L. Oppy, 77, of Wheelersburg, went to see the Lord Friday, June 24, 2011, at home. She was born July 21, 1933, in South Webster, a daughter of the late Harry Frederick Bauer and Edna Elsie Conkey Bauer.
 
She was a housewife and "Nana" and was a member of Bloom Free Will Baptist Church and a 1950 graduate of Bloom High School.
 
She is survived by her husband, Paul F. Oppy, whom she married July 1, 1950, in South Webster; one son, Larry Dean Oppy and wife Sandy, of Wheelersburg; four daughters, Nadene Roberts and husband Charles, of Middleburg, Fla; Priscilla Stiles, of Newark, Ohio; Barbie Sowards and husband Michael, of Amelia; one brother, Lloyd Bauer, of Mango, Fla; one sister, Juanita Shamhart, of Wheelersburg; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Oppy, and two brothers, Chester and Carl Bauer.

Chester was retired from Dayton Malleable in Ironton and attended Pine Creek Free Will Baptist Church. He was married 51 years to Betty L. Dotson Rase, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Paula Roach and husband Roy, of Ironton; Wilma DeCamp and husband Dennis, of Wheelersburg; June Book and husband Rich, of Minford; Patricia Rase Whithers, of Columbus; one sister, Carol Rase, of Pedro; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Rase and Michael Waddell two brothers, Edward and Lemoine Rase; three sisters, Dorothy Rase, Helen Rase and Ruth Cook.

Corey was born November 26, 1969, in Portsmouth, a son of Donald Lee and Cheryl Cogman Bender, of Minford.
 
Corey was a 1988 graduate of Minford High School, a proud member of the Local 577 Plumbers and Pipefitters, and a member of Central Church of Christ. He was a youth Soccer coach for several years at Valley Schools and loved the outdoor and spending time with his family.
 
He was married September 24, 1994, in Charleston, S.C, to Shannon Lawson Bender, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Corey "Ty" Bender, at home, two daughters, Ashleigh Danielle Bender, of Portsmouth, and Jessica Morgan Bender, at home; two brothers, Scott Bender and wife Genoma, of Wheelersburg; Jonathan Charles Bender, of Columbus; his grandmother, Mary Sunshine Jarman and husband Harold, of Ponca City, OK; and several aunts and uncles. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold Cogman and Charles and Mary Bender.

Gerardo was a member of the 7th Street Christian Baptist Church in Portsmouth and was employed by Scioto Valley Heating and Air.
 
He is survived by his wife, Tonya Lynn Mullins Reffit, whom he married September 26, 2002. Also surviving are one daughter, Staci Nicole Reffit, at home; four brothers, Mark Reffit and wife Stephanie, of Minford; Hector Reffit and wife Jennifer, of Minford; Miquel Reffit, of Florida; Jose Rios, of North Carolina;five sisters, Patty Moore, of New Boston; Veronica Jones and husband Jimmy, of Otway; Sonia Cottle, of Jackson, Carol Marx and husband JJ, of Wheelersburg, Maria Jamie, of Mexico, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the First Church of God in New Boston, a retired Cook with Wheelersburg Elementary School, and a a member of the 1961 class of Glenwood High School.
 
She was married March 12, 1960, in Greenup, to Donald Ray Porter, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Dwayne Porter and wife Dorothea Euton Porter, of Grove City, Ohio; one daughter, Dena Knopf and husband Randall, of Milan, Ind; one brother, Rev. Charles Martin and wife Kay, of Huntington, W.Va; two sisters, Freda Fremont and husband Jack, of New Boston; Ada Louise Blankenship and husband Phil, of McDermott; her grandchildren, Aaron Knopf, Andrea (Calvin) McCarthy, Amanda Porter, Nathan (Kristen) Porter, Holly Porter and Adam Porter; her great-grandchildren, Caitlin McCarthy, Cailey McCarthy, Kelsie McCarthy, Greyson Hill and Randall Knopf II. Clifford Mowery, 81, of Wheelersburg, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011, after an extended illness at Best Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Cliff was born June 17, 1929, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Leonard Mowery and Eula Huffman Mowery. He attended Portsmouth High School until he joined the Navy in 1947. He served as a Corpsman on the ship Hope during the Korean War. He returned home and received a degree in Radiation and Laboratory Technology and worked at Oak Hill Hospital for 20 years and then the Atomic Energy Plant in Piketon for 22 years until retirement in 1999. He was a member of Portland Masonic Lodge #366 in Oak Hill, attended Wheelersburg United Methodist Church, was a Volunteer First Aid instructor for the Red Cross, and a Swimming instructor for many years.
 
He was married for 50 years to Artheretta Welch Mowery, who passed away in 1999. He is survived by his two children, Scott Mowery and wife Kathy, of Cincinnati; and Michelle Carter and husband Steve, of Wheelersburg; four grandchildren, Chris, Ronelle, Alex and Matthew, and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and Harold Mowery.

She was married August 15, 1942, at Union Free Will Baptist Church, to Rev. Forrest L. Chamberlin, who survives. Also surviving are five sons, David Chamberlin and wife Sharon, of Wheelersburg; Dwight Chamberlin and wife Linda, of Wheelersburg; Doug Chamberlin and wife Patty, of Hartsville, SC; Denny Chamberlin and wife Cheryl, of Irwin, PA; Dale Chamberlin and wife Cathy, of Wheelersburg; two daughters, Doris Chamberlin, of Wheelersburg, and Deena Armstrong and husband Mike, of Wheelersburg; one brother, Howard White, of Slocum; one sister, Wilma Reilly, of Charlotte, NC; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul White, and a grandson, Phillip Chamberlin.

She is survived by one daughter, Marcella Jennings, of Leander, Texas; one sister, Dorothy Robletto, of Columbus; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Lee Sissel, and numerous brothers and sisters.

Irene Kegley Fuhr, 86, of Summerville, South Carolina, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 26, 2011. She was born November 10, 1924, in Greenup Kentucky. After residing in Sciotoville and Elyria, Ohio, she settled in Summerville, S.C.
 
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip F. Fuhr, a son, Larry Lilly, and parents Alfred and Rose Kegley and sister Ruth Kegley. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lanata (Robert) Parson, of LaGrange, Ohio; and Priscille "Pat" McIntosh, of Summerville, SC; her sisters, Esther Mingus, of Bellevue, Ohio and Mary Lowe, of Hilliard, Ohio; as well as 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Randy was a 1979 graduate of Wheelersburg High School, and was formerly employed by Exxon Mobil and EPH VAC, in Texas.
 
He was married October 11, 1987, in Beaumont, Texas, to Brenda Arlene Markham Evans, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Cody Justin Evans, at home; one daughter, Danielle Nicole Evans, at home; and 2 brothers, Gary Evans and wife Lisa, of Hendersonville, NC; and Scott Evans and wife Sheila, of Minford.

She is survived by her son, Ralph "Butch"Armes and wife Lori, of South Shore; and 2 grandchildren, Jason Armes and wife Amy, and Justin Armes. She was also preceded in death a brother, Ralph Armes; one brother in infancy; sisters Beulah Miles, Myrtle Williams, Georgia Tingler, and one sister in infancy.

Wilma Clark, 73, of Wheelersburg, moved into her new home on Hallelujah Blvd. on April 2, 2011, where she is shouting on the streets of gold after a three year battle with cancer.The oldest of 12 children, she was born September 29, 1937 in Orr, KY to the late Elihue and Elva Prince Salyers.
Wilma was a graduate of Green Twp. High School, Portsmouth Interstate Business College, and attended Southern State College and Shawnee State College. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Professional Women’s Club of America and the American Heart Association both in Adams County Ohio.
 
She also was preceded in death by three sons Wayne Lewis, Jeffery C. Hatten and Roy D. Hatten; three brothers, Larry, Rodger and Stanley Salyers and one sister Peggy S. Salyers.
 
Survivors include her husband John Clark, whom she married May 24, 1996, one daughter Linda Hatten (Richard) Ellis of Franklin Furnace, who has lovingly taken care of her through her sickness; two sons, Rick (Debbie) Hatten of Franklin Furnace and Kendall (Tammie) Lewis of Wheelersburg; one step-daughter Margaret Clark of Mississippi; one step-son Randy Clark of Dayton, OH. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren, Jeremy Wells, Jessica Bradford, & Bethany Wells, Jackie Hayslip, Jody and Ricky Hatten, Alan Lewis, Sherri Burgess & Carrie Rangel, and Ashley, and Nathan Lewis; 13 great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; three very special sisters, Kay Stapleton, Audrey Dotson and Deborah Nash, all of Franklin Furnace; four brothers Robert, Ralph, Darrell, and Dannie Salyers all of Franklin Furnace, and many nieces, nephews & cousins.
 
Wilma was an active member of Plymouth Heights Nazarene Church where she worked in many different ministries including the STAR prison ministry, and was a member of the choir. She was a former member of the Portsmouth & Adams County - Church of God as she lived in other areas over the last 30 years. She loved her Heavenly Father, church family, her children, and grandchildren with a passion.

She was married November 21, 1930, in Greenup, to Elmer Brown, who preceded her in death January 16, 1982.

Thelma Mae Wolford, 76, of Wheelersburg, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Thelma was born March 5, 1935, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Butler Glenn and Mattie Mullins Glenn.
 
She was a former Certified Nurse's Aide and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hillsboro.
 
She is survived by seven sons, Donald Sparks (Gail Telling) of South Shore; James Sparks and wife Sandy, of South Shore; Glen Sparks, of Galloway, Ohio; Billy Sparks and wife Susan, of Franklin Furnace; Terry Sparks (Colleen Kelly) of Peebles; Gerry Sparks and wife Jaime, of Mt. Orab; Carl Joseph Wolford (Christina Redmond), of Amelia; one daughter, Brenda Lovett and husband Scott, of Hillsboro; one sister, Jean Warnock, of Portsmouth; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Connie Holtzapfel, of Franklin Furnace. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Herschell Glenn.
 
Friends may call Thursday from 5-8 PM at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg. The funeral service will be private with interment at Firebrick Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

David Merrill McWhorter, 42, of Wheelersburg, died March 15, 2011 following an auto accident on Shela Blvd. He was born March 5, 1969 in East Liverpool, Ohio, a son of Vicki King McWhorter of Wheelersburg and the late Billy McWhorter. He was a self-employed computer technician.
 
Also surviving is a brother Kevin McWhorter of Procterville.
Private funeral arrangements are at the convenience of the family. Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home of Wheelersburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Hall Newsome, 65, of Wheelersburg, made her crossing to her heavenly home Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was born October 10, 1945, in Ironton, to the late Taylor Hall and Avala Stumbo Hall.
 
She attended Green Schools and was a member of Sand Hill Christian Baptist Church.
 
She was married May 16, 1964, to Thomas R. Newsome, who preceded her in death October 25, 2007.
 
Surviving are one son, Scott Newsome and wife Alisha, of Wheelersburg; one daughter, Tina White, of Wheelersburg; four grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy Newsome; two sisters, Virginia and Violet; and six brothers, Virgil "John", Revis, Estil, George, Taylor Jr and Robert Hall.
 
Funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Sand Hill Christian Baptist Church, with Pastor Ronnie Blevins offiating, with burial at Junior Furnace Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 11-1 PM at the church.

Lorena R. Fisher, 91, of Sciotoville died Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Concord Health & Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
 
She was a long time member of Sciotoville (now Christ) United Methodist Church.She was born August 28, 1919 with her twin sister Lorraine to the late Edward and Esther Smith.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Prince Fisher. She is survived by her sister Lorraine Staker of Wheelersburg. She has one daughter, Susan (Donald) Moeser of Portsmouth and her children: Frank (April) Lewis of Lake Elisnore, CA, Kathy (Joe) Dulje of Spring, TX, Peggy Spears of Sciotoville, Jennifer (Rick) Rider of Portsmouth and Jeff (Lisa) Lewis of Pickerington and 12 great-grandchildren. Lorena also has a son, Michael Fisher of Sciotoville and his children: Cindy (Dan) Bauer of South Webster, Todd (Jayn) Fisher of Santa Fe, NM and Courtney (Shelly) Fisher of Waverly and 6 grandchildren. In addition, she has 13 great great grandchildren.
 
There will be no visitation. A private graveside memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg.

Agnes Nora Gearheart, 83, of Wheelersburg, a longtime Sciotoville Resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center's Emergency Room.
 
Agnes was born April 25, 1927, in New Boston, a daughter of the late Lewis Gearheart and Martha Fletcher Gearheart. She worked at Mitchellace for 35 years, was a Beautician and of the Baptist Faith. She was a very special and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
 
Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Elaine Salyers, 69, of Franklin Furnace, died peacefully on February 3, 2011 at her home following an extended illness. Elaine was born July 26, 1941 in Antigo, Wisconsin. She was the beloved daughter of Lalie Arrowood Cunningham and the late John Cunningham. Elaine was the devoted wife of Larry Salyers whom she married on February 27, 1960 in Bryant, Wisconsin. She was a member of the Ohio Valley United Baptist Church.
 
She was the loving mother of Keith (Sharon) Salyers of South Shore, Kentucky; Melanie (Marty) McCoy of Franklin Furnace, Ohio; Larry (Amy) Salyers, Jr. of Paducah, Kentucky; Joan (Jeff) Frazier of South Shore, Kentucky; Caroline (Randy) King of Franklin Furnace, Ohio; and Helana (Kevin)Darrow of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the loving grandmother of fourteen grandchildren, the late Keith Jake Salyers, Sarah Salyers, Tyler Salyers, Jamie Sexton, Candice Hamby, Marty McCoy, Allison McCoy, Rebecca Frazier, Cassie King, Sammie King, Randy King, Chloe Darrow, Claire Darrow and Cooper Darrow and one great-grandchild Corwin Sexton. She was the dear sister to Doris Burkhart, the late Edward Cunningham, the late Alan Cunningham, Frank Cunningham, Arthur Cunningham, Gail Priebe, Rosie Cunningham, Virginia Endres and the late Ruth Cunningham.
 
She was the best mother, grandmother and wife in the world.
 
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 8 at 1 p.m. at Ohio Valley United Baptist Church, Vernon Street, Wheelersburg, by Elder J.D. Riggs and Elder Don Neeley. Burial will be in HaverhillCemetery in Haverhill, Ohio.
 
Visitation will be on Monday, February 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Stanley Raymond Willis, 91, of Wheelersburg, died Sunday, January 30, 2011, at SOMC Hospice. He was born August 11, 1919, in Wheelersburg, to the late Frank and Murl Spears Willis.
 
He was a retired Farmer and a Construction Worker for thirty years at Ellis Construction Company.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel "Susie" Maple Willis an infant son, S. Raymond Willis; a sister, Geneva Overholtzer and two great-granddaughters.
 
Surviving are one daughter, Rita Patton and husband Tim; brothers Edwin Willis, James Willis and wife Donna; his sister, Dorothy "Dot" Carter, a grandson, Craig Patton and wife Lisa; a granddaughter, Dawn Rayburn and husband Craig; four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Kimberly “Kim”, a Portsmouth, Ohio, native, went home to be with The Lord after a long illness. Kim loved her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
 
She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Shawnee State University. She was an accomplished musician as a mandolin player.
 
She was preceded in passing from this life to heaven by her father and mother, Floyd and Jane Rigsby, and a brother, Mike Rigsby.
 
She is survived by her sister, Kathy Hammond and brother-in-law Walter “Buddy” Hammond of Savannah, GA, sister Carolyn Downey and brother-in-law Renice Downey of Columbus, Ohio, brother Gary Rigsby and sister-in-law Mickie Rigsby of Chillicothe, Ohio, three nieces being Tracey, Heather and Tara, and one nephew, Gary Lee, and a number of grandnephews and grandnieces and many extended family members.
 
Swick, Bussa & Chamberlin, 11901 Gallia Pike Road, Wheelersburg, Ohio, will administer the burial at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg, Ohio. There will be no funeral service at Kim’s request.

Deliliah Jewel Chamberlin, 95, of Wheelersburg, died Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Concord Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.
 
She was born November 16, 1915, in Gallipolis, a daughter of the late Arthur Coriell and Ola Strasbaugh Coriell. She was a homemaker and a member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church. She was married June 15, 1935, at the Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene, to William Chamberlin, who preceded her in death July 28, 1978.
 
She is survived by eight sons, Vaughn Chamberlin and wife Brenda; Jack Chamberlin and wife Mary; Ronald Chamberlin and wife Keri; Randall Chamberlin and wife Connie; Timothy Chamberlin and wife Donna; Rod Chamberlin and wife Lynn, all of Wheelersburg; Mark Chamberlin and wife Crystal, of Sciotoville; Bill Chamberlin, of Buffalo, New York; four daughters, Ruth Ishmael, of Aiken, S.C; Shirley Hoskins and husband John; Geneene Collins and husband Jim, Karlene Thompson and husband Bill, all of Wheelersburg; one brother, David "Cot" Coriell, of Wheelersburg; and one sister, Lima Chamberlin, of Wheelersburg; 41 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
 
She was also preceded in death by one son, Terrance Chamberlin; one daughter, Earlene Chamberlin; two brothers, Cecil "Tip" Coriell, and Robert Coriell; four sisters, Mildred Rolfe, Ethel "Peg" Kemper, Jenny Maynard and Opal Coriell.
 
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Union Free Will Baptist Church, with Pastor Chris Oiler officiating, with interment at Vernon Cemetery. Ina Jane Bowen

Ina Jane Bowen, formerly Ina Jane Horsley, of Portsmouth, passed away on January 17, 2011, in Portsmouth Ohio. Born in Scioto County on January 28, 1945, she was a graduate and salutatorian of South Webster High School’s class of 1962. She went on to receive a degree from Marshall University in nursing and spent her entire career as a Registered Nurse. She worked in many areas of nursing but had a special gift for working with the elderly and in nursing home care. She had recently retired from Shawnee Mental Health Systems. She loved to crochet and gave many crochet gifts to family and friends. She was a faithful member of Sciotoville Christian Church where she sang special music and in the choir. Ina Jane was an extremely giving person but never wanted acknowledgment or acclaim for her giving.
 
The daughter of Willard and Alma Horsley, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Betty Stewart of Antwerp, Ohio, and Helen Johnson of Wheelersburg, Ohio. She is survived by one brother: Jim Horsley, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, nine nieces and nephews: Mike Stewart, Pat Stewart, Kim Schaefer, Bob Johnson, Kathy Porter, Greg Johnson, Rhonda Mays, Carol Bailey, and Jeff Horsley. She is also survived by a very good friend and sister in Christ; Donna Rowe, as well as many other family members and friends.
 
Visitation will be held on Wednesday January 19, 2011, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Vernon Cemetery on Thursday January 20th at 11:00am.

Bruce Gregory Payne, 58, of Wheelersburg, died Monday, January 10, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
 
He was born August 24, 1952, in Portsmouth, a son of Bruce H. and Helen Fetters Payne, of Wheelersburg. Also surviving are his sister, Claudia Ann Burk and husband Dean, of Lakeland, Florida; one niece, Lyndsey Renee Delaney and husband Todd and nephew Dustin James Burk and wife Ryane. Greg was an avid outdoorsman, a hunter, fisherman and dearly loved by his black Lab, "Sophie."
 
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Rev. James E. Wells and Rev. Jimmie Dale Rickett, 68, of Peebles, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at home. He was born Oct. 23, 1942 in Petersville, Ky., a son of the late Alfred and Georgia Mae Jones Rickett. He was retired from General Electric.
 
Jimmie is survived by a son, Joseph Dale Rickett and a daughter Sheila Bick both, of Peebles; four grandchildren, Brandon and Shonacy Bick and Joseph and Christopher Rickett; and was also preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Otworth Rickett.
 
Funeral Services will be Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 at 1 pm with Rev. David Iiames officiating, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg where friends may call from 11 am until 1 pm on Saturday.

Ronald James "Buck" Akers, 71, of Sciotoville, went to be with the Lord Thursday, January 6, 2011, at SOMC Hospice.
 
He was born May 1, 1939, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Roy James Akers and Katherine Elliott Akers Roush.
 
Ron was retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 577, a 1957 graduate of Portsmouth High School, a Navy Veteran, a member of the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion, a member of the Wheelersburg Western-Sun Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite.
 
He was married November 2, 1967, in Greenup, to Diana Ruth McKenzie Akers, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Akers and wife Tammy, of Franklin Furnace; Raymond Akers and wife Louanna, of Lucasville; three daughters, Rhonda Burke and husband Darren, of Minford; Renee Dingus of Sciotoville; Kathy Myers of West Portsmouth; two sisters, Pam Akers of Wheelersburg and Rita Poling and husband Roger, of North Carolina; grandchildren Taylor Akers, Kayla and Lee Burke; Aaron and Cassie Akers, Seth and Katilyn Dingus; McKenzie Bocook; Addyson and Gavin Akers, Jeremy and Jessie Myers, JP Spradlin,two step-grandsons, Justin and Clayton Blevins; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Myers and Eli Spradlin; special brothers and sisters in law, Leo and Donna McKenzie and Vicki and Louie Bentley. He was also preceded in death by one son, Ronald Akers, Jr; one brother, Phillip Akers and stepfather John Roush.

Larkin "Larry" Conley, 64, of Wheelersburg, traveled on quietly in his sleep Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at home. He was born June 9, 1946, in Portsmouth, a son of the late William L. Conley and Minta Wiley Conley.
 
Larry was a retired Electrician and Pipefitter, a member of Sciotoville Christian Church, a member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge #69, and Valley of Covington Scottish Rite.
He was married February 14, 1997, in New Boston, to Cathrine L. Hatfield Conley, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Larkin Larry Conley II, of Wheelersburg; Roy Rundquist, of Diamond, Ohio; Eric Rundquist, of Wheelersburg; two daughters, Twanta M. Craft, of South Webster; Carol Justice and husband Matt, of Sciotoville; one sister, Dorothy L. Conley, of Wheelersburg; and grandchildren Cody, Makalyn, Cameron, Matthew and Marissa.
 
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard D. Conley and William D. Conley, and four sisters, Annalou Conley, Rosalee Conley, Joyce Conley and Jackie Hayslip.
